Vol. 309 No. 5

Written Answers. - Killing of Foxes.

423.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the extent of shooting and trapping of foxes for the purpose of exporting fox pelts, the serious consequences of a shortage of foxes in a number of hunting districts, and the repercussions of this on the horse industry, especially the effects on the sale of hunters and potential show jumpers and event horses; and, if so, the action he proposes to take in the matter.

While I am aware of an increase in demand for fox skins there is no information available to me to suggest consequential repercussions on the horse industry. I have initiated an investigation of the biology of the fox and have under active consideration ways and means of monitoring the export trade in fox skins.
