asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that auxiliary postmen, whose duties are now reduced to a five-day week, have lost a Saturday allowance of 75p; and, in view of the meagre wage being paid to postmen in this grade who are carrying out a very necessary service, he considers the reduction justified.

The five-day week for auxiliary postmen is being implemented on foot of a claim submitted under the scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service by the union representing auxiliary postmen. The extra allowance for attendance on Saturday is not payable when Saturday attendance ceases. The pay rates of auxiliary postmen are settled under the scheme of conciliation and arbitration.
