Vol. 310 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shankill (Dublin) Garda Station.

353.

asked the Minister for Justice the date on which a proposal for the replacement of the Garda Station at Shankill, County Dublin, was first made to his Department; the action taken on such proposal since then; the floor area and facilities of the present Garda station; the amount of the area of the station which is at present in normal everyday use; and the structural and decorative condition of the building, with particular reference to the first floor area.

Shankill Garda station was first scheduled for replacement in November 1961 and the Commissioners of Public Works were asked to acquire a site and build a new station at that time. I am informed by the commissioners that the delay in this case is mainly due to difficulties in acquiring a suitable site. I understand that a site is under consideration at present.

The floor area of the existing station is approximately 1,900 square feet. Toilet facilities and wash-hand basins with hot and cold water are provided. Approximately 90 per cent of the station area is at present in normal everyday use. The Office of Public Works consider that the structural condition of the building is sound. They say that the general standard of decoration is fair but redecoration of some areas is necessary, including a room on the first floor which is used as a storeroom. They are arranging to have all necessary redecoration carried out as soon as possible.
