Vol. 310 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork New Garda Stations.

319.

asked the Minister for Justice (i) the proposals, if any, to open new Garda stations in Cork City; (ii) the locations of these stations; (iii) if sites have been acquired; (iv) if, and when, tenders were invited for their construction; and (v) when building will commence.

It is proposed to erect new Garda stations at Blackrock, Mayfield and Gurranabraher. The stations at Mayfield and Gurranabraher will replace the existing stations at St. Luke's and Shandon.

I understand from the Office of Public Works, who are arranging for the acquisition of sites for the new stations, that terms for the purchase of sites at the three centres have been agreed but that the legal formalities relating to the acquisition have not yet been completed. Accordingly, I am not in a position at this stage to indicate when tenders are likely to be invited or when construction works are likely to commence.

It is also proposed to erect a new station at Douglas to replace the existing one and a suitable site is currently being sought by the Office of Public Works.

Proposals for the reorganisation of Cork Division, which may involve the erection of additional Garda stations, are being considered, but it will be some time before final decisions are reached in the matter.
