Vol. 310 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport.

308.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that children living in Brierfield, Ballinasloe, County Galway, are being denied transport to the secondary schools at Tuam, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The pupils in question reside in the Mountbellew catchment area. Catchment boundary facilities to Tuam could not be accorded to them until it had been ascertained whether there was room for them on the bus to Tuam.

I understand that it has been found possible to accommodate them on the bus and that tickets to travel on it were issued on the 9 October 1978.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that there is grave discontent with the new transport arrangements to the secondary school at Glenamaddy, County Galway.

I am aware that the Dunmore school authorities object to the encroachment on their catchment area of a bus bringing pupils to the post-primary schools in Glenamaddy. The route in dispute has been in operation since 1968 and to change it at this stage would disturb the established practice of attendance at the Glenamaddy schools from this area. A local meeting between the parties involved which was presided over by a senior officer of my Department failed to reach agreement on the issue. The service to Glenamaddy as it operated up to the closing of the schools for the summer holidays this year is being continued for the present.
