asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the building of Birr Community School, County Offaly is now almost fully completed; if he is aware that this school is due to open in September 1979; if he is aware that 900 pupils will have no sports or recreational facilities of any kind; if he agrees that this should be remedied immediately; and if he will outline the steps his Department are taking to provide such facilities in the school, in view of the necessity for them.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 511 of 17 October 1978 in regard to the question of the provision of sports halls and gymnasia.
The question of capital expenditure on sports halls has to be considered in relation to its implications on the capital resources available for the provision of general school accommodation.
Consideration continues to be given to this matter and it will be specifically examined in connection with preparation of the 1979 Estimates.

asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of Community Schools in the country; (2) the number of such schools with gymnasiums and sports complexes; and (3) the number of such schools without gymnasiums and sports complexes.
The number of Community Schools in the country at present is 26, of which 18 have sports halls and 8 do not.
