Vol. 311 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Donegal Leaving Certificate Result.

272.

asked the Minister for Education why a student (details supplied) attending St. Columbanus Comprehensive School, Glenties, County Donegal, who sat the leaving certificate examination last year, was informed that she had failed the examination in accounting (higher level) but that, on application to have her papers rechecked, it was found that she had in fact obtained honours; if he is satisfied that this is an isolated case and that no other student has been deprived of the correct awards; and the steps it is proposed to take to ensure that this will not happen again.

The operation of the appeals system ensures as in this case that no injustice is done to any candidate.

The standard procedure in connection with appeals by school authorities on behalf of their candidates against grades awarded in subjects at the leaving certificate examination was followed in this case. Revision of the case in conjunction with a report from an appeals examiner in accordance with such procedure indicated that a higher rating was warranted.
