asked the Minister for Finance the net saving to the Exchequer of the recent first phase of withdrawal of food subsidies and this amount as a percentage of the total Government estimate of current expenditure for 1979.

It is estimated that the saving in subsidy payments by the Exchequer as a result of the recent reductions in subsidy on milk, butter and flour will be approximately £22 million in 1979. As the Deputy will appreciate, it would not be possible to indicate what this amount represents as a percentage of the estimate of total Exchequer current expenditure in 1979 in advance of the budget.
