Vol. 311 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crookhaven (Cork) Harbour.

189.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make funds available for the development of the harbour at Crookhaven, west Cork; and, in particular, if he will support the efforts of the Crookhaven Community Committee to develop the harbour.

My Department have requested the Office of Public Works to furnish an engineering report and estimate of cost in respect of suggested improvements to the harbour at Crookhaven. Until this report has been received and examined I cannot say what improvement works, if any, will be carried out at this harbour in the fishery interest or what grants, if any, will be made.

In regard to the development of the harbour by Crookhaven Community Committee, I will be glad to arrange for the examination of any plans which that committee may have for the harbour provided I am given full details of their proposals. I must state, however, that grants are given by my Department only in regard to improvements carried out in the interests of commercial fishing and only to the extent which my Department consider is justified to meet the present and foreseeable needs of the fishermen.
