Vol. 311 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

2.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the number of people appointed to his Department since assuming office including details of (a) grades and date of appointment; (b) salaries, and (c) the names of, and responsibilities assigned to, any person appointed above the rank of clerical officer.

As the answer is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

I accept that this information must necessarily be in the form of a tabular statement. Is the Minister aware that one of the persons so appointed by the Minister apparently also holds an official position in the European Progressive Democrats? Does the Minister consider this is consonant with his holding a position in our public service?

I am not quite certain what the Deputy is getting at.

It does not arise. It is a separate question.

I know the official concerned and I should like to pay tribute to his capacity and to the work he has been doing and is now doing in his present office. I am quite satisfied. I am sure the Deputy is not impugning the integrity of the official concerned.

The question related to names of and responsibilities assigned to certain people and I am asking the Minister to tell the House whether in his opinion there is any conflict between any responsibilities which may be assigned to that person within the Department and any political responsibility he may have assumed outside the Department.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs would not have the assistance of this individual if there was a conflict and it can be taken, therefore, that there is not a conflict.
