Vol. 311 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Job Opportunities.

1.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of the lack of jobs and job opportunities in the Derrybrien area of County Galway; and if he has any plans to provide jobs in that area.

I understand that there are 32 persons from the Derrybrien area on the live register of whom 14 are smallholders.

I have been advised that recruitment has already commenced for a new IDA-assisted manufacturing company which has recently been established in Loughrea. In addition, the Industrial Development Authority are at present involved in negotiations for the establishment of other projects in Loughrea which at full production would provide approximately 300 jobs.

It would be helpful if the Deputy would advise those who are at present unemployed in the area to contact the office of the National Manpower Service in Galway where they will be given every assistance in their efforts to find suitable employment.

I think the Minister should use the same method of notifying them of this industry in Loughrea as he is doing in the Garda stations in the county when they go to sign for unemployment assistance.

Is that a question? I sincerely mean what I said in my reply. I understand that Gort is ten miles and Loughrea is eight miles from Derrybrien. There are quite a number of industrial developments in the area—the Deputy may have read about them in the newspapers today. I would encourage the Deputy to tell these people to contact the National Manpower offices.

May I take it from the Minister's reply that the people who are unemployed in that area will find employment in Loughrea?

The National Manpower Service will make every effort to find employment there for them.

A lot of problems have been solved in a second.
