asked the Minister for Finance further to his Financial Statement of 7 February 1979 in which he stated that there were £40 million of unspent balances in the hands of Departments as of the end of 1978, if he will give in respect of each Department the unspent balance and tabulate the reason therefor.

The estimate of £40 million is comprised of relatively small individual credits remaining in the hands of accountants of the various Departments at end-year. The precise sum will not be known until the appropriation account for each Department is available later this year.
