Vol. 312 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Islands Report.

8.

andMr. Kenny asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development if the Government has received a report from the Central Development Committee regarding the islands off our coast, if this report has been accepted by the Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Central Development Committee, which reports to me, prepared a report containing proposals in regard to the inhabited non-Gaeltacht islands off the West Coast. Arising from the report the Government decided on a series of measures aimed at improving the standards of living of the island inhabitants and ensuring the maintenance and strengthening of economic and social progress. The measures decided on include the provision of electricity on certain islands, improvements in assistance for housing, improvements to water supply, sanitary services and communications, general economic development and community development.

The implementation of the measures, some of which will require legislation, will be carried out by the appropriate Departments, local authorities and State-sponsored bodies.

I have decided to establish a permanent sub-committee of the Central Development Committee to enable the Government's aims in relation to island development to be fully realised.

Has the Minister any costings in relation to this matter?

The total cost of the initial set of proposals would be in the region of £750,000.

Is Inisbiggle included in that scheme?
