Vol. 313 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin School Staff.

301.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that a school (details supplied) in Dublin is five pupils short of the required 300 to retain in a permanent way a principal and eight assistants; that because of this fact a temporary appointment was approved last year which is due to cease in June next; and that in view of the high number of children in the school requiring help in literacy and numeracy he will approve the present establishment as permanent.

I am aware of the staffing and enrolment position in the school mentioned in the Deputy's question. The present staff of principal plus eight assistants may be continued in a permanent capacity under the Rules for National Schools subject to an average enrolment of 275 pupils being maintained. This results from the recent reduction by me of the average enrolment required for the retention of the eighth assistant in a national school from 300 pupils to 275.
