Vol. 313 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Educational Facilities for Deaf.

13.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that no facilities exist in the Limerick area for the educational needs of the deaf, and the action, if any, proposed in this regard.

A visiting teacher of the deaf, based in Limerick, serves the educational needs of the hearing-impaired in Limerick city and county from pre-school age onwards. This teacher provides comprehensive guidance for the parents of hearing-impaired children and liases with the local schools which the children attend.

Children whose degree of handicap is such that they cannot be catered for in local schools are provided with places in the central residential schools for the hearing-impaired situated in Dublin.

Already, I have conveyed to representatives of the parents of the children in question my preparedness to meet them at an early date to discuss the problem.
