The 1971 Census recorded that there were 726,363 private households in permanent housing units in the State. By 31 December 1978 it is estimated that the stock had increased to approximately 855,000; of this total 127,000 units were provided since January 1974. Statistics of the number of private households in permanent housing units at 1 April 1979 will be available when the results of the recent census have been collated and published.
