Vol. 314 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Dismissals and Retirements.

14.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of members of the Garda Síochána dismissed from the force in 1978, (b) the number given the option to retire in lieu of dismissal in 1978 and (c) the number called on to resign or be retired on medical grounds in the same year.

Excluding from consideration a particular case which is at present before the courts and which, being sub judice, cannot be referred to by me directly or by implication, the answer is that in 1978 three members were dismissed from the Garda Síochána, three were given the option to retire in lieu of dismissal, and three were required to retire on medical grounds.

Is the Minister in a position to assure us that there was not any political push in respect of any of these cases?

There was not any political push whatever.

Is the Minister satisfied that there was not any push from authority?

Perhaps the Deputy would explain that question.

Is the Minister satisfied that there was not victimisation in any of these cases?

I am perfectly satisfied that there was no victimisation involved.
