Vol. 315 No. 9

Written Answers. - Societies' Expenditure Rules.

108.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the penalties, if any, to which industrial and provident societies or agricultural co-operatives may be subject in respect of actions taken or moneys expended on objects not contained in their registered rules.

109.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the names of each industrial and provident society and agricultural co-operative registered with the Registrar of Friendly Societies and the objects of each society as contained in their rules.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 108 and 109 together.

I am informed by the Registrar of Friendly Societies that there are in excess of 1,100 industrial and provident societies, each with its own separate rules, currently registered in the Registry of Friendly Societies. It would, therefore, be impracticable in this reply to set out the names and objects of each individual society or to state what is or what is not contained in the rules. However, a list of registered societies is published annually in the report of the Registrar of Friendly Societies. Copies of the reports are available in the Dáil Library. The rules of any industrial and provident society may be inspected at the Registry of Friendly Societies, 2nd Floor, Frederick Building, Setanta Centre, Dublin 2, by any interested party. Copies of the rules may also be obtained from the registrar or from the society in question on payment of the appropriate fee.

With regard to penalties for breeches of a society's rules I would draw the Deputy's attention to sections 62 to 70 of the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1893, sections 10 and 11 of the Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Act, 1913, and section 28 of the Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Act, 1978.
