Vol. 316 No. 6

Written Answers. - Safety Signs.

404.

asked the Minister for Labour with reference to the EEC directive on Safety Signs "At Work" the measures he is taking to ensure that places of employment in Ireland comply with the directive and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The directive requires member states to introduce legislation before 1 January 1981, specifying the signs and colours to be used when safety signs and colours are required by law or provided on a voluntary basis; it does not specify when and where signs should be provided but that, wherever such signs are used, they should conform to those specified in the directive. As a first step the terms of the directive have been widely circulated, most recently through the journal of the National Industrial Safety Organisation. I intend to give effect to the requirements of the directive by regulations to be made under the European Communities Act, 1972.
