Vol. 316 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foodstuffs Labelling.

5.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the measures being taken to implement the EEC Directive on the labelling of foodstuffs.

The Directive in question was adopted on 18 December 1978 and notified to this country on 22 December 1978.

With a view to the preparation of such amendments to Irish law as may be necessary to give effect to the provisions of the directive within the time-periods specified in it, consultation with various interests are necessary. These consultations have begun and are to be extended further.

In the case of Ireland, the specified time limits for implementation of the Directive expire,

(a) on 21 December 1980

as regards trade in products which comply with the provisions of the directive

(b) on 21 December 1982

as regards trade in products which do not comply with the provisions of the directive; in other words, after that date trade will be prohibited in those products—except those exempted—which do not comply with the directive.

How is it proposed to incorporate this matter into Irish law? Will it be done by statute or by order of the European Communities?
