Written Answers. - CIE Subsidies Cost.
Normally reference to the Exchequer subsidy to CIE is taken as referring to the provision for grants to CIE in the Tourism and Transport Vote. The provision for 1979 for these grants is £56.184 million, after Supplementary Estimates. Under EEC regulations, however, the bulk of this provision is treated as payments for public service obligations in respect of road and rail passenger services.
There are other voted provisions for payments to CIE and the amounts provided for these for 1979 are set out below. In general, these payments are made to enable CIE either to provide a special service or to provide transport free of charge or at reduced rates and as such are not regarded as subsidies to CIE.
