asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will extend eligibility for the fuel subsidy scheme to deserted wives and unmarried mothers.
The fuel scheme for this season has been in operation since the beginning of October and I am not in a position to make any changes in the eligible categories at this stage. Deserted wives and unmarried mothers who may have difficulties in meeting their heating needs should apply for assistance for this purpose under the supplementary welfare allowances scheme.
