Vol. 318 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nuclear Accident Liability.

31.

andMr. Quinn asked the Minister for Energy if under the terms of the Euratom Treaties Ireland has set a limit in financial terms to third party liability from a nuclear accident arising from a nuclear power plant sited in this country and if so, the limit to such third party liability.

The answer to the Deputies' question is in the negative.

Third party liability in the field of nuclear energy is in fact governed by the OECD Paris Convention of 1960 and a supplementary Brussels Convention of 1963.

Ireland has not signed these conventions. The question of accession to them has been kept under consideration but a firm decision in the matter has been deferred pending completion of a revision of the conventions at present in train.
