Vol. 318 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inishboffin Island Electricity Supply.

11.

asked the Minister for Energy when work will commence on installation of electricity on Inishboffin, County Galway.

Inishboffin is one of a number of inhabited islands off the west coast which, it was decided, should be supplied with electricity. An estimate made by the ESB indicates that the cost of supplying these islands would be considerably more than was originally thought. Moreover the proportion of capital costs which beneficiaries would have to bear would, if calculated by reference to the normal criteria, be unduly burdensome. I am examining the matter to see what can be done in the light of this situation.

Would Inishboffin be a good place for the ESB to install an experimental programme of wind power?

That is one of the matters under consideration.

Question No. 12 is for written answer.
