Vol. 318 No. 6

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

385.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of man-hours lost in Ireland during 1979 in industrial disputes with comparative figures for the previous two years.

The Central Statistics Office is the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes. Statistics published by that office, which are expressed in terms of man-days lost, not in man-hours, show that the number of man-days lost through strikes in 1977 and 1978 were 442,145 and 624,266 respectively.

Figures are not yet available from the CSO in respect of man-days lost during 1979, but my Department estimate that the figure was approximately 1,427,000. Of these 1,315,000 occurred during the six months up to 30 June 1979.
