The Central Statistics Office is the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes. Statistics published by that office, which are expressed in terms of man-days lost, not in man-hours, show that the number of man-days lost through strikes in 1977 and 1978 were 442,145 and 624,266 respectively.
Figures are not yet available from the CSO in respect of man-days lost during 1979, but my Department estimate that the figure was approximately 1,427,000. Of these 1,315,000 occurred during the six months up to 30 June 1979.
