Vol. 318 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Belturbet (Cavan) House Building.

7.

(Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for the Environment the cause of the delay in proceeding with the building of 20 local authority houses at Belturbet, County Cavan, on which work ceased several months ago and if he will take steps to have the houses completed without further delay.

The execution of this scheme is entirely a matter for the county council under its devolved responsibilities. I understand from them that some difficulties have arisen under the contract which are being dealt with by the parties to the contract, in accordance with its provisions. My intervention would be inappropriate.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I am obliged to the Minister, but is he aware that this scheme started, apparently got as far as the foundation stage, then closed down completely a long time ago—it looks nearly like 12 months ago? There is a complete standstill, although there is a great demand for houses in Belturbet. Could the Minister tell us the reason for the closing down, when it closed down and when it is likely to start again?

There are 20 houses involved and it is a matter for Cavan County Council. In July last there was a difference of opinion among the parties who drew up the contract. It would be inappropriate for me to interfere.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Does the Minister agree that it is certainly time somebody interfered to get the scheme started again?

Of course, it is. It is a matter for the Cavan County Council, who are now responsible. I should like to point out that I am not responsible.

(Cavan-Monaghan): The Minister may not be aware that it is difficult for the people of Belturbet to find out exactly the cause for the delay. Will the Minister be good enough to ask Cavan County Council to take whatever steps are necessary to get the scheme started again?

Well, we can have a look into that.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I am obliged.
