asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons (a) registered for PAYE, and (b) self-employed who are (i) married and (ii) single.

Following are the required particulars in relation to the current tax year 1979-80: (a) There are 1,052,000 employees registered under PAYE. Of these (i) some 500,000 are married persons (including 85,000 working wives registered as separate persons), (ii) some 510,000 are single and 42,000 are widowed persons; (b) The number of self-employed persons on the tax rolls is about 155,000. Of these (i) some 97,000 are married persons (including 35,000 working wives), (ii) some 45,500 are single and 12,500 are widowed persons. The numbers given for both PAYE and self-employed include persons who, due to the operation of various allowances and reliefs, will have no liability to tax.
