Vol. 319 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Warden Service.

19.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the involvement of school children in the traffic warden service at schools, if his attention has been drawn to the threat to school children from situations of (i) a high volume of traffic passing the school, (ii) dangerous road conditions, (iii) heavy vehicles which require more time to halt than motor cars, and if he will review the present practice.

The junior school warden service, to which the Deputy is referring, is operated at present by local authorities in 18 counties. There are particulars of the scheme in the current Rules of the Road booklet, and additional information may be had from the National Road Safety Association, by whom the system is sponsored. As regards the specific points raised by the Deputy, I understand that these schemes are strictly limited to locations which the local authority judge to be suitable by reference to the road and traffic conditions. The locations are also identified by an advance warning sign.

I am not aware of any grounds which would warrant a review by me of the system as operated at present.
