Vol. 319 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disability Benefit Arrears.

8.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of weeks for which arrears of disability benefit are outstanding to a person (details supplied) in Dublin, the total amount involved and the date payment will issue.

The person concerned was paid disability benefit by my Department from December 1976 to 25 August 1979. Payment was disallowed after that date following his examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work. He was subsequently examined by a different medical referee who also considered that he was capable of work. The disallowance was upheld on appeal and the claimant was notified accordingly. He has since submitted a final certificate from his doctor certifying that he is capable of work.

The person concerned was originally considered capable of work by a medical referee on 2 August 1979 but in order to avoid hardship, payment of disability benefit was continued up to 25 August 1979. In the circumstances, there are no arrears of benefit due to him.

Question No. 9 has gone for written reply.
