asked the Taoiseach if he will introduce some form of national awards to grant recognition to those who give signal service to the nation.

This matter is not at present under consideration.

Would the Taoiseach not agree that the absence of any national awards causes problems in that we tend to give directorships of State companies and peace commissioner positions as awards which are entirely inappropriate. It might be helpful if we had some form of recognised awards and if the other positions I mentioned were given to persons who would be suitable for them.

I would be interested to know if the Fine Gael Party have changed their minds on this matter since it was last mooted. On that occasion they were opposed to any such proposal.
