Vol. 320 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Piers.

19.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry (a) the amount estimated to be necessary in the survey carried out some years ago to improve the pier at Oileán na gCaorac, Bere Island, County Cork, and (b) the amount now being spent on the pier.

The survey of fishing ports and landing places in County Cork which was carried out in 1972 recommended an extension of the sloping pier at Oileán na gCaorach, Bere Island, to make it accessible at all stages of tide. The survey team did not estimate the cost.

This work, which commenced on 7 August 1979, was estimated by the Office of Public Works in November 1979 to cost £25,000.

20.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will confirm the details of the grant due to the local fishermen's association for work done on Travara Pier, Beara in South West Cork and when payment will issue.

The improvement work on Travara Pier was carried out by the local fishermen without the prior approval of my Department. However, as it has since been established that the work was necessary and as it was carried out satisfactorily this Department is considering the feasibility of making a grant towards the cost of the work. As the pier in question is under the control of the Cork County Council their acceptance of responsibility for the future maintenance of the works carried out will be necessary.
