It is estimated that on 1 January 1980 the number of employees in the public service was 199,000 representing an increase of 7,000 over 1 January 1979.
The public service, for this purpose, comprises the civil service (including industrial employees), teachers, the Defence Forces, the Garda Síochána and the employees of local authorities and health boards.
