Vol. 321 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Improvement.

15.

asked the Minister for the Environment the EEC aid which is being sought for the improvement of road networks.

With regard to the European Investment Bank and the EEC's New Community Borrowing and Lending Instrument (NIC), there are at present no formal requests outstanding for loans for road projects in Ireland. However, it is Ireland's policy to request loans from the EIB and/or NIC for all suitable infrastructure projects being financed within the public capital programme. Accordingly, suitable road projects will be submitted for EIB and/or NIC loans at the appropriate time.

In March 1980 the Department of Finance submitted an application for some £2.77 millions in aid from the European Regional Development Fund towards the cost of improvement works being carried out on the national road network in 1979 and 1980. This application is at present being considered by the Commission, and a favourable decision is expected within the next few months.
