Vol. 321 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Caravan Parks Prohibition.

35.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the methods whereby an order prohibiting caravan parks along sea fronts is applied.

In so far as sanitary authorities are concerned camping controls are contained in Part IV of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948.

Section 31 enables a local authority to make an order designating an area where camping is totally prohibited if they are of the opinion that the erection or retention of temporary dwellings in that area would be prejudicial to public health or the amenities of the locality or would interfere with traffic on the road.

The order comes into operation 30 days after its publication in a daily newspaper circulating in the area unless there is an application to have it annulled, in which case the Minister may confirm, annul or alter the order. An order which has been confirmed or altered comes into operation 14 days after the decision.
