Vol. 321 No. 5

Written Answers. - ECSC Benefits.

337.

andMr. O'Toole asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism the details of any benefit received by Ireland from the European Coal and Steel Community.

As far as my responsibilities are concerned, loans have been granted by the ECSC:

(a) For the Irish Steel development project in course of construction at Haulbowline; (b) for the establishment of replacement industries in areas affected by the closing of Ballingarry coal mines. The amounts involved were £17.5 million under (a) and £1 million under (b). A grant of approximately £20,000 for the ergonomics project for Irish Steel Ltd. was also provided.

I understand that loans have been approved for the building, modernisation and construction of houses for workers in the coal and steel industries. This area is the responsibility of the Minister for the Environment.

I understand that a research grant has been provided in relation to coal. This area is the responsibility of the Minister for Energy.
