Vol. 321 No. 5

Written Answers. - Salmon Fishing.

405.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will extend by 12 hours the period during which dependent fishermen may fish salmon in the Boyne Estuary.

To combat the decline in our salmon stocks in recent years additional statutory salmon conservation measures were introduced in 1979. Those measures include an extension of the weekly close time by 24 hours which effectively reduced the salmon fishing period each week during the season from five days to four days. I am satisfied that this reduction continues to be necessary for salmon conservation purposes. Accordingly I am not prepared to extend by 12 hours each week the salmon fishing period in the Boyne Estuary.
