Vol. 321 No. 6

Written Answers. - University of Dublin Appointments Freeze.

40.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the decision of the University of Dublin to freeze all appointments due to a shortfall in financial support of about £500,000 in 1980.

Decisions in relation to the appointment of staff in the universities are made by the authorities of the university concerned. Discussions in relation to the financial circumstances of each university and related aspects of administration take place as appropriate with the Higher Education Authority.

I understand that the Financial Allocation from Vote 34 for Trinity College in 1980 has been the subject of discussion with the authority and that reference was made to relevant aspects of the staffing and general administration of the college. I understand that further discussions may take place in due course in this regard.
