Vol. 321 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Institute of Technology.

70.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement outlining (i) the status of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (ii) the future development and role of this institute in the context of technological education in the Dublin region, in view of the evolution of NIHE, Dublin and (iii) the role of the institute in relation to the awarding of certificates and diplomas.

I understand that the name "Dublin Institute of Technology" is used by Dublin City Vocational Education Committee as the nomenclature for the technological and equivalent level colleges of the committee.

It will be the responsibility of my Department in consultation with the Higher Education Authority to promote a harmonious and complementary development of courses of study in the colleges of the vocational education committee and in the National Institute of Higher Education, Dublin as well as in the proposed regional technical colleges in the Dublin area.

It is anticipated that the individual colleges of the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee will be designated for the purpose of section 20 of the National Council for Educational Awards Act 1979 and that awards will be made by the council in respect of a variety of courses in the colleges.

The Dublin Institute of Technology is not empowered under statute to award certificates and diplomas.
