Vol. 322 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Naval Sub-bases.

23.

asked the Minister for Defence if the establishment of sub-bases for the Naval Service in the mid-western and north-western coastal regions, referred to by his predecessor in an interview with the press (details supplied), is still under consideration; if the establishment of a sub-base on the east coast is also being considered; if he will outline his attitude to these proposals; when a decision will be made; and the progress made to date.

The question of improving the capability of the Naval Service to carry out its functions is kept continually under review in the light of needs and resources. Such options as the establishment of sub-bases for the Naval Service in the eastern, western and north-western coastal regions are taken into consideration. There are, however, no plans at present for the establishment of sub-bases outside Haulbowline.

I understand that this matter has been under consideration for a long time. Could the Minister give an indication as to when that consideration will produce a decision? Would he consider further sub-bases where An Slua Mhuirí could avail of training facilities?

I cannot indicate when conclusions are likely to be reached. There are many factors involved. Certain areas have been listed as alternative bases such as Castletownbere, the Shannon Estuary at Foynes, Galway, the Aran Islands, Blacksod Bay, Sligo, Killybegs, Lough Swilly at Rathmullen, Howth and Dunmore East. There is no evidence yet as to when firm decisions will be reached in the matter.
