Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - Strawberry Prices.

110.

andMr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to the serious adverse effect which the importation of cheap strawberries into the United Kingdom from Eastern Europe is having on Irish exports of strawberries to that country; whether he has discussed the matter with the UK Minister for Agriculture; and the steps, if any, he proposes to take to ensure that Ireland's traditional export market in the United Kingdom is maintained.

I am aware that the price of processed strawberries on the UK market has dropped in recent months due to keen competition from countries which supply that market. The UK firms which have traditionally taken supplies from this country will continue to do so this season. The position will be kept under review and if it is established that a distortion of trade is being caused by imports from non-EEC sources, appropriate steps will be initiated within the terms of Community procedures.
