Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - Electricity Power Station.

203.

asked the Minister for Energy if the Electricity Supply Board have any plans to build a power station at Coumshingam Lake in the Comeragh mountains along lines of Turlough Hill development in County Wicklow; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This is one of a number of sites for a pumped storage scheme which the ESB have under investigation as part of the board's on-going work in relation to its long-term plans.

The board are carrying out preliminary investigations on this and many other sites to determine their feasibility for pumped storage and other types of electricity generation.

I would emphasise that this is a preliminary stage and involves a comparative evaluation of a number of possible sites. Any firm proposal, by the board to construct the station would first have to be approved by me and would also be subject to the normal planning and environmental legislation procedures.
