asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the decrepit and dirty condition of many Irish legal tender notes in circulation, and if he will take urgent action to remedy this situation.

The Central Bank are responsible for the issue of legal tender notes. The bank have informed me that they are concerned about the situation, particularly in the case of the one pound note, and have taken steps to improve the quality of paper used in note production. It is hoped that this will lead to a gradual improvement.
