Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - National Manpower Service.

57.

asked the Minister for Labour if he considers the title National Manpower Service should be changed in view of the fact that it implies discrimination against women.

There is no question of this service discriminating against women and in fact it is prohibited by law from doing so.

Far from so discriminating the service is actively involved in bringing the provisions of the Employment Equality Act to the notice of employers and job seekers. The word "manpower" is used by other countries as well as Ireland, and also by international organisations, to denote activities related to the labour market.

I do not contemplate a change in the title at present.
