asked the Minister for Justice (1) the number of members who left the Garda Síochána in each year from 1969 to date under the following headings: (a) dismissal or discharge, (b) death, (c) retirement and (d) resignation; (2) if he will give a breakdown of the years of service of those who resigned in each year: (3) the total number of new members recruited into the force in each year during this period; (4) the actual total Garda strength in each of these years; (5) the authorised strength in each year; (6) if he will give a breakdown of the actual strength in the following categories: (a) the total in the Dublin Metropolitan area, (b) the total in Border divisions, (c) the total outside (a) and (b) in each year; (7) the total Garda Vote for each year and the proportion this represents of the total expenditure on the public service in each year; and (8) the proportion of the total Garda Vote spent on (a) wages excluding overtime, (b) overtime, (c) equipment and (d) uniforms in each year since 1969.

At regards the request at (6) for a breakdown of Garda strength in certain areas, particulars of the strength in the Border divisions are not shown separately as it would be contrary to established practice and to the public interest to give the numbers of members assigned to these areas.
Details of the Garda Síochána Vote and of the total expenditure on the Public Service for each year since 1969 are published in the annual Book of Estimates and in the Appropriation Accounts, respectively. These publications are available in the Oireachtas Library. The only available information sought in the question which is not shown in these publications is certain expenditure relating to 1979, particulars of which are as follows:
