Mr. Boland

asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the planned provision of sheltered workshops for the handicapped in each health board area; the stage such plans have reached in each case; and when it is anticipated that each such workshop will be provided.

Minister for Health (Dr. Woods)

: The general position with regard to the nature and location of further community workshop facilities for the handicapped is under review at present in the light of the substantial expansion of such facilities over the past five years. The situation in the Dublin area is being specially examined at health board level in consultation with the Rehabilitation Institute.

As regards provision for the mentally handicapped, further training and sheltered workshop facilities are planned at the following locations: Dundalk, Cootehill, Portlaoise, Athlone, Tullamore, Drumcar, Bray, Celbridge, Tralee, Limerick and Letterkenny.

The time-scale for the provision of these new facilities will depend largely on the availability of funds for capital developments. The major new residential developments in planning or building for adolescent and adult mentally handicapped will also include training and workshop facilities.
