Vol. 324 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clarinbridge (Galway) Dispute.

11.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the unsatisfactory situation that exists between the oyster buyers and the water keepers at Clarinbridge, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the situation.

The position is that matters in dispute between oyster buyers at Clarinbridge and the Western regional Fisheries Board are sub judice and I am not, therefore, in a position to make any statement in the matter.

I do not think that is altogether correct. There is one individual involved.

The Deputy should ask a question.

How many people are involved in this dispute?

There are a number of disputes. Four or six local buyers are in difficulties concerning action in regard to under-sized oysters. Another action is being taken in the High Court by three buyers in regard to an annulment of the Oyster Fishery (Clarinbridge) Order, 1978. A number of incidents occurred between water keepers who tried to inspect the fisheries to seek to have a reasonable degree of control and management in regard to the oyster situation. It is difficult. It is not just one person; there are a number of people involved.

About three months ago the Minister promised these people licences and to date they have not heard anything.

Their problem was discussed on 4 September in very great detail. But the court proceedings unfortunately are proceeding at the same time and there is nothing the Minister can do until the determination of the case.

Can the Minister not issue licences to those buyers for this oyster fishery even now?

We have answered only 12 questions in 30 minutes. There are other Deputies anxious to have their questions answered.

This is a very important matter. Will these licences be issued or will they not?

We are not talking about Galway fishermen. We are talking about local buyers.

Next question, please.

Will the Chair allow me one further supplementary? Is the Minister aware that the month of December is the month for catching oysters?

If people want to bring legal proceedings they must realise that legal proceedings stop any other matters being done.

Is the Minister saying that there will be no licences granted this year?
