I am aware of the problem of glue sniffing among young people in the Dublin area. The problem appears to be restricted to about 30 children of travelling people.
Seven children have been admitted to hospital suffering from the adverse effects of glue sniffing in the last six months. A few other children have been treated in out-patient departments.
My Department, the Eastern Health Board and the Dublin Committee for Travelling People are constantly reviewing the situation. The Dublin committee have established a resource centre, with the support of my Department and the Eastern Health Board, for young travellers including those who are glue sniffing. This centre is developing a range of activities and training opportunities to give these children other interests in life. When fully operational, this centre will provide a 24-hour service.
