Vol. 325 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Employment.

20.

(Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware that at least one factory in Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan, has closed down and that others there are on short time; and the proposals the IDA or his Department have for the improvement of the employment situation there.

I am fully aware of the industrial situation in Ballyjamesduff. I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that they are paying special attention to the town and are actively promoting the vacated factory for a suitable new industry.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Could the Minister give me an idea of the total unemployment in the town at present? Am I right in saying that one factory has closed down and that all the others with one exception are on short time?

That is right. They are trying to bring in new industries to make up for job losses.

(Cavan-Monaghan): How many are unemployed in the town?

The Deputy did not ask me that. I will give him the information later.
