Vol. 325 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of people at work in the Kilcock area of County Kildare.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of people currently unemployed in the Kilcock area of County Kildare.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 2 and 3 together.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available. With regard to the numbers unemployed there is no local employment office in the town of Kilcock. Total figures for the numbers of persons on the live register residing in different counties and in towns with legally defined boundaries are complied on a quarterly basis, but since the town of Kilcock has no legally defined boundary, information on this basis is not available.

Concerning the question on the number of persons at work in the Kilcock area, such information at this level of geographical detail is available only from a full census of population.

Is the Minister of State aware that 190 jobs at the bakery in Kilcock are under threat and have the Government any proposals to save them?

The Deputy will be aware of the Government's tremendous efforts to provide employment for all our people.

Is the Minister aware that we have the highest unemployment figures ever for this time of year? Is he aware that this is the situation in Kilcock and that a worse situation could exist after 31 December?

That is argument.

I am aware of the grave situation that exists but the Deputy should show the same responsibility that we showed towards this matter.

Have the Government any proposals to provide jobs or save the ones that are there in Kilcock?

The Deputy should update himself on the present position.

Would the Minister please control himself? I am calling the next question.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons registered as unemployed in the various social welfare offices in County Mayo at the most recent date for which figures are available; and the number at the same date in 1978 and 1979.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information for 28 November 1980 with comparable figures for the corresponding dates in 1979 and 1978.

Following is the statement:
