asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in relation to each curriculum or syllabus committee operating under the aegis of his Department (a) the name of the committee or area or subject covered; (b) the identity of the members of the committee, and the interest, if any, represented by each of them; (c) the date on which each member was appointed or re-appointed, and the person or body by whom each was so appointed; (d) the number of times each committee have met in the past 12 months; and (e) the date on which each committee last met.

It would not be in accordance with normal practice to give the names of the members of these committees.

Information, other than the names of the members, in reply to parts (a) and (b) of the question is as follows:

(a) Leaving Certificate subjects for each of which there is a Syllabus Committee — Gaeilge, English, Classics (includes Latin, Greek and Hebrew), Modern Continental Languages.

(a) Leaving Certificate subjects for each of which there is a Syllabus Committee — Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics and Chemistry, Biology, Applied Mathematics, Engineering Workshop, Theory and Practice, Technical Drawing, Building Construction, Mechanics, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Economics, Home Economics, General and Social and Scientific, Accounting, Business Organisation, Economics, Economic History, History, Geography, Music and Musicianship, Art, Religious Education.

(a) Intermediate Certificate subjects for each of which there is a Syllabus Committee — Gaeilge, English, Mathematics, History, Classics (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Classical Studies), Modern Continental Languages, Science, Music and Musicianship, Art, Woodwork, Metalwork, Mechanical Drawing, Commerce, Civics, Geography, Home Economics.

(b) The composition of each Syllabus Committee is as follows: (i) Department of Education, two representatives one of whom acts as Chairman; (ii) Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland: one representative; (iii) Teachers Union of Ireland, one representative; (iv) Joint Managerial Body, two representatives; (v) Subject Association (e.g. History Teachers Association of Ireland), one representative; (vi) Chief Executive Officers' Association, one representative; (vii) In the case of Leaving Certificate Committees, the National University of Ireland (NUI): and the University of Dublin (TCD): one representative each.

The information requested at (c), (d) and (e) is not readily available and the amount of official time involved in its compilation would be excessive.
